first name (of husband) + last name (of husband), Mrs
- first name (of husband) + last name (of husband), Mrs
When writing to the wife of John Smith it is considered to be ‘correct’ to write to ‘Mrs John Smith’ rather than to ‘Mrs Mary Smith’, using her own first name. This style is very rare in speech, but it can occur in special situations. In A Woman Called Fancy, by Frank Yerby, a man who is said to be in love with the woman who is now his sister-in-law addresses her both as ‘my dear sister-in-law’ and as ‘Mrs Tyler Brantley’. He is presumably reminding her, and himself, of her married status, especially since her husband is his brother.
